LIHEAP Opens To The General Public On December 3

Georgia's regular Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) will open to the general public at 8:00 a.m. on December 3 on a first come, first served basis to be placed on a waiting list for assistance. Service is dependent on funding availability. The program provides financial assistance on a first come, first served basis to low-income households to help defray their home heating costs.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or legally admitted aliens. Households participating in the program must meet income criteria and be responsible for the cost of heating their homes. To be eligible, households must have an income equal to or less than 60% of Georgia's state median income guidelines: $22,839 annually for a household of one; $29,866 for two persons; $36,894 for three persons; $43,921 for four persons; $50,948 for five persons; $57,976 for six persons; $59,293 for seven persons; $60,611 for eight persons; and for each additional person add $1,318.

In the Southwest Georgia Community Action Council service area, interested individuals or those who look after the interest of elderly or homebound individuals must call the Neighborhood Service Center (NSC) that serves their county of residence to place their name on the applicant list. You or your representative must call and place your name on the list for an appointment time for an application to be completed. Do not go to the local Neighborhood Service Center (NSC).

When signing up please be prepared to provide a phone number that will be valid until the program period ends. We cannot guarantee that changed numbers will be updated on the waiting list.

Applicants must provide a valid form of picture identification. Applicants should also provide proof of income for all household members for the last 30 days. This may be a paycheck stub, bank statement, or a letter granting public assistance, Social Security, or unemployment benefits. Applicants must also provide valid Social Security cards for all household members and their most recent utility or fuel bill. Households whose fuel costs are included in their rent are ineligible for assistance.

Please note that the Social Security Administration will no longer provide printouts to verify social security numbers; individuals must apply for a replacement card. An application for LIHEAP cannot be completed without social security cards for all household members. If you have lost your card, please apply for a replacement card as soon as possible at your local Social Security Administration office.

NSC business hours will be 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, for the duration of this program. Click here for a listing of NSCs.
